ATHENS FARMERs MARKET at Doug Gates Park

A longtime cornerstone of downtown Athens, the Farmers Market at Doug Gates Park has served as a vital gathering place for local vendors and the community. The recent renovation was a public-private endeavor that transformed the market and it's site into a multifunctional park that refurbished the existing pavilion, created a new stage and gathering space for music, increased vendor space, and improved site accessibility, vehicular circulation, and drainage through grant-funded low impact development. The result is a vibrant, adaptable public space that thoughtfully balances infrastructure, sustainability, and community-focused placemaking.
The Athens Farmers Market was started to support local agriculture and increase economic opportunities for farmers, small businesses, and artisans; to educate and provide access to healthy local foods; and to build a vibrant gathering place for Athens residents and visitors. The Athens Main Street Board, the overseers of the market, decided that it was time to elevate the space to better serve our growing community and to honor the life of long time Athens Main Street supporter and board member, Doug Gates. AMBL Studios was proud to serve on the Design Committee for the Athens Farmers Market at Doug Gates Park and to provide the design for the renovation.
